Columbia Avenue / Southwest Avenue Bridge Reconstruction

The Columbia Avenue / Southwest Avenue Bridge Reconstruction Project is a federally supported transportation project in Saint Louis, Missouri. The 0.19 miles of project corrdidor are located at the intersections of Brannon Avenue, Columbia Avenue, and Southwest Avenue to Botanical Avenue and Columbia Avenue in Saint Louis, Missouri. 

These two bridges over Union Pacific Railroad are severly deteriorated and have reached the end of their serviceable life. The Southwest Avenue Bridge was originally constructed in 1913. The Columbia Avenue Bridge was originally built in 1918 and has been closed to traffic due to extensive deteriortation. The vertical clearance under the existing bridges is approximately 17 feet, which does not provide safe clearance for Union Pacific railway travel. Additionally, MODOT has identified several deficiencies in the deck, superstructure, and substructure.

Impovements to these two bridges will provide a functional, reliable, and safe transportation facility to serve the residential community, cultural and commercial districts, and freight movement. 

Project Objectives

Bridge Reconstruction:

• Demolishment of Columbia Avenue and Southwest Avenue bridges
• Construction of one new bridge
• Increased railroad clearance 

Pedestrian/Cyclist Improvements:

• ADA upgrades
• Traffic signal improvements
• Sidewalk construction and reconstruction
• Marked shared roadways / sharrows
• Curb ramp construction and reconstruction
• Railing or protective barrier construction
• Marked shared bicycle lane construction
