File a Citizen Petition

Filing citizen petitions for recalls, initiatives and referendums to the St. Louis Board of Elections.

Overview

The Charter of the City of St. Louis authorizes three kinds of citizen petitions:

  • Recall Petition - Recall an elected official (Article III).
  • Initiative Petition - Propose an ordinance or an amendment to the City Charter (Article V).
  • Referendum Petition - Request reconsideration of an ordinance (Article VI).

Instructions

In-Person

  1. Complete all relevant petition materials as required per petition by the city charter.
  2. Submit all petition materials to the Board of Elections office:

    Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM 

  3. Submissions must be no less than 90 days prior to a deadline. 

Fees

No fees associated with submitting a petition. 

What to Expect

After submission of the correct information the Board of Elections will contact you with more details on the status of a petition.
