SLDC Highlights Sustainability

Key Sustainability Initiatives and examples of how SLDC is achieving sustainability goals.

Key Sustainability Initiatives

  • SLDC requires every new development that receives incentives to submit a Sustainability Impact Statement outlining how the development plans conform to the City's Sustainability Plan.
  • LRA and MSD have partnered together on a $3 million pilot green stormwater infrastructure program designed to reduce the amount of sewer outflow volumes that occur during moderate to heavy rainfalls.
  • SLDC is working within the CORTEX district and the North Riverfront on green stormwater infrastructure improvements.
  • The Land Reutilization Authority has granted garden leases on 57 acres throughout the City (photo below)

McKean Community Garden

The Tower Grove East McKean Community Garden, located on an LRA parcel, is one of 494 garden leases in the City.

  • SLDC recently completed $19.6 million in infrastructure improvements to the City-owned Municipal River Terminal (photo above); construction yielded a 2,000 linear foot dock, allowing 10 barges to moor simultaneously. Barges have the smallest carbon footprint among other cargo transportation modes.
  • Set the Pace St. Louis, a program to help property owners finance energy-efficient projects, launched in 2013 and has already received applications for $7 million worth of projects.
  • Since 2004, SLDC has received 15 Environmental Protection Agency Brownfield Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund and Cleanup grants targeted to reduce unacceptable threats to human health and the environment.

SLDC's purpose is to grow investments and jobs in the City of St. Louis by increasing the value of real estate while enabling the sustainability and success of neighborhoods.

Since 2004, SLDC has remediated 56 acres of environmentally contaminated urban land.
