An important step in your retirement planning includes helping to ensure financial stability for your loved ones.  And you can do that quickly and easily by selecting a beneficiary for your plan.  While life itself may be filled with uncertainties, you don't want any uncertainty about who will receive the benefit of the savings you've worked hard to accumulate.

You may be able to update your beneficiary in a few simple steps by logging in to your plan's website:

  • Click the "Beneficiary" link under the My Profile icon
  • Review current beneficiary information and click "Update Beneficiary," if needed
  • Click "Change Beneficiaries"
  • Fill in the the information about your new beneficiary and then click "Submit Changes"  (Please note:  You will need a Social Security number, birth date, and mailing address for each new beneficiary.)
  • After verifying the information is correct, click "Continue"
  • You will receive a Beneficiary Change Confirmation message -- please print the confirmation screen for your records
Alternatively, you may download a Beneficiary Designation Form from your plan's website or request the form from your plan administrator.

Note:  If you are married, your plan may require that your spouse be the primary beneficiary and receive 100% of your account in the event of your death, unless spousal consent is obtained to select a different beneficiary and distribution percentage.  If you would like to designate someone other than your spouse as beneficiary, you will need to complete a paper beneficiary form.  Spousal consent will be required with the submission of the paper form.

When it comes to talking about choosing a beneficiary, don't let there be "Sounds of Silence."
