ST. LOUIS PUBLIC LIBRARY'S MAY AUTHORS @ YOUR LIBRARY SERIES LINEUP
The St. Louis Public Library is proud to present Joan Barthel, Charlie Brennan, Gordon Korman, Dr. John F. Marszalek, Scott Phillips, and Elaine Viets as part of the May installment of its popular Authors @ Your Library series. All events are FREE and open to the public.
- Dr. John F. Marszalek delivers the Keynote Address for the 2014 Ulysses S. Grant Symposium, "Warriors of the New Warfare: Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman." The event takes place at Central Library, 1301 Olive St., on May 3 at 3 p.m.
Marszalek is the author or editor of 13 books including Court Martial (which was made into a motion picture); Sherman, A Soldier's Passion for Order; The Petticoat Affair: Manners, Mutiny, and Sex in Andrew Jackson's White House; and A Black Congressman in the Age of Jim Crow: South Carolina's George Washington Murray.
- Joan Barthel discusses and signs her book American Saint: The Life of Elizabeth Seton. The event takes place at the Schlafly Branch, 225 N. Euclid Ave., on May 8 at7 p.m.
Barthel explores the life of this remarkable and adventurous 18th-century woman, who on her own—not as the wife of a prominent man—left a lasting imprint on American history by establishing the first order of American nuns.
Barthel is the award-winning author of five nonfiction books and a contributor to many national publications, including The Washington Post Magazine. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri.

- Elaine Viets discusses and signs her book, CatNapped. The event takes place at the Buder Branch, 4401 Hampton Ave.,on May 9 at 10 a.m.
Viets' new hardcover mystery is the most recent entry in the Dead-End Job series, which is a satirical look at a serious subject—the minimum-wage world. This time Helen and Phil are on the trail of two killers and a kitty kidnapper.

- Gordon Korman is the Spring 2014 Reading Pays—Pass It On! author. The event takes place at Central Library, 1301 Olive St., on May 13 at 6 p.m.
Kids in Grades 3-6 can get a FREE copy of Korman's book, Swindle,a t any Branch (while supplies last). When kids finish the book, they "pass it on" by sharing it with a friend.
Swindle introduces a dream team of kids who perform blockbuster-movie-style operations—from stealing back a million-dollar baseball card, to breaking mistreated animals out of a cheesy zoo, to hiding a lovable but unstable and occasionally vicious Doberman from his unscrupulous former owner.
Korman's books have been translated into nearly 30 languages and have sold over 25 million copies worldwide.

- As part of the StL250 celebration, Charlie Brennan discusses and signs his book Amazing St. Louis: 250 Years of Great Tales and Curiosities. The event takes place at Central Library, 1301 Olive St., on May 21 at 7 p.m.
The book tells of "firsts" that hail from St. Louis; from milestones in American history to the invention of the ice cream cone.
Brennan, now in his 26thyear at KMOX, hosts The Charlie Brennan Show weekdays from 8:30-11 a.m. Best known for his passion for St. Louis, Brennan has been named "One of the Most Influential St. Louisans" five years in a row by The St. Louis Business Journal.

- Scott Phillips discusses and signs his book Hop Alley. The event takes place at the Carpenter Branch, 3309 S. Grand Blvd., on May 22 at 7p.m.
Phillips' latest novel, Hop Alley, picks up where his 2004 novel, Cottonwood,l eft off. Bill is now living as Bill Sadlaw in Denver, running a photo studio near the Chinese part of town known as Hop Alley. He spends his days enjoying a sensual affair with Priscilla, a drug-addicted singer. It seems that Bill can't stay away from trouble. He is forced to confront the mysterious murder of his housekeeper's brother-in-law.
Phillips is the author of The Ice Harvest, The Walkway, Cottonwood, The Adjustment, and Rake.
