Overview, preparation and instructions to apply for a Vendor - Itinerant Business License

Overview

Itinerant vendor license requirements are as follows:

  • This vendor must be on private property, not on any public property (sidewalk, street, or park), and must be in a building or enclosed structure and for not more than three (3) consecutive days per license period.
  • $200.00 Vendor's License (Street or Sidewalk) is NOT an accepted license.

Instructions

Step 1: Obtain State Sales Tax Number

Register with the State of Missouri for a State Sales Tax Number and obtain this number before visiting City Hall.

If you are not selling a product, proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Obtain Property Permission

Obtain written permission from the owner of the property where the stand is to be located. This letter should be on company letterhead or a notarized letter from owner. Letter should also include the date(s) of the sale. All sales must be in a building or enclosed structure.

Step 3: Apply for License

Apply and pay for an Itinerant Vendor License. Your license will be issued after all the necessary requirements are met.

Cost: $25.00 a day.

Payment must be in cash, money order or cashier's check ONLY. This can only be issued for 3 consecutive days at a time.

Step 4: Obtain Statement of Clearance

In addition to visiting the License Collector’s office, you will also need to obtain a clearance from the Collector of Revenue’s office at the location below:

Step 5: Obtain Health Permit

(if selling food)

The health dept will require a copy of your paid receipt for a Itinerant Vendor License, before a health application can be taken.

Cost: $50.00 per day, which must be paid with a business check or money order.

Step 6: Obtain Fire Permit

If propane is being used, you must obtain a Fire Permit.

You will need to provide proof of a current insurance policy with the following coverage:

  1. 25,000 Individual
  2. 50,000 Multiple Injury
  3. 10,000 Property

Step 7: Obtain Itinerant Vendor License

After receiving all of the above required permits, you will need to return to the License Collector's Office for your license to be issued.

 

What to Expect

Once all clearances and payments are received, you will be able to obtain your license to do business in the City of St. Louis.

 

Additional Information

If you pay by check, the license application may be held for several working days until the check clears.

A separate Business License is required for each business location or trade name (St. Louis City Ordinance 52030).
