Big Brothers/Big Sisters Woolworth Bldg

Located at the northwest corner of Olive and Grand, the Woolworth Building has been renovated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri (a United Way organization). It is now officially the Big Brothers Big Sisters Building and is also home to Kranzberg Arts Center.

The Woolworth store was built in 1940 after the Old Beers Hotel was destroyed by fire. The new building was constructed in a way that 13 additional stories to be added in the future. The plans called for a “modern design with bold horizontal lines.” The original building was built with only two stories, but in 1950 a third floor, a pair of new escalators, new terrazzo floors, modern lighting fixtures and air conditioning were added to make for a newly remodeled F.W. Woolworth store.
