Permitting for Temporary Power Using Generators
Suppliers of portable generators, which are used for events that do not have need of normal power, and the parties leasing those generators, need to be aware of the following:
The installation of generators falls under the provisions of the NEC. Wiring is Article 445, Grounding Article 250. The wiring which runs from the generator to the different venues will be covered by Articles 525 and 590.
The grounding and wiring from the generator must be installed by a License Electrical Contractor. This contractor must pull the proper permits and be present for inspection by the City's Building Division Electrical Inspectors. Our office has had problems in the past with contractors pulling permits to set and ground the generator and not to run the wiring for them.
This information is provided here to let all parties know what the contractor's responsibility is when they they pull their permit so that everything can be done according to the code and the City ordinance.
Together we can ensure that events using a generator for their power will be a safe installation for the venue and the public which will be in attendance.
