The New Year is off to a great start.  There are many entertaining events on the schedule in St. Louis for this weekend, but before I highlight a few of those activities, I want to encourage you to make sure you and your family are ready for the winter storms that will surely come our way in the next few months.

Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow.  Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures, strong winds, sleet and freezing rain.  Here’s a short checklist:

  • Water – at least a 3-day supply; one gallon per person per day
  • Food – at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
  • Extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Sanitation items
  • Cell phone with chargers
  • Extra warm clothing for all members of the family
