  • Minimum: $44,928.00
  • Maximum: $52,260.00

This position is selected for the Hiring Incentive Program. The incentive shall be in the amount of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1500.00) upon completion of the probationary period.  The hiring incentive will be paid (if funds are available) by the Department/Division which appoints the applicant.  The hiring incentive is not available to current City employees. The eligible list for this position will be used to fill both permanent and per performance vacancies. Permanent positions require City residency within 120 days of completion of the working test period, receive a shift differential of 1% for evening, night and weekend shifts and are covered by the Employee Benefits Program. Per performance positions do not require City residency and are not covered by the Employee Benefits Program. Per performance positions are paid $21.60/hour. Work involves shift, weekend, holiday and on-call assignments. Candidates must provide their availability for shift and weekend assignments on the Availability Section of the Employment Application.

Position Specifications

Incumbents in this position apprehend/impound stray and biting animals, investigate complaints of cruelty and neglect, educate citizens, work with community volunteers and provide humane care to the in-shelter population.

Minimum Qualifications

Some experience handling and controlling animals in an animal shelter, kennel or animal care business. OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application.

Your employment experience and training will be used to determine whether you meet the entrance requirements for this position and to compute your experience and training evaluation.  Applicants will only receive credit for their experience, training and education as shown on the application. MEDICAL:  Candidates will be required to pass an oral swab "Drug Screen" as part of the Medical examination.

NOTE: Candidates who are hired will be required to receive pre-exposure rabies prophylactic.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request.  The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.  City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points. 

Some positions may require candidates to pass a “Character Investigation” prior to appointment.
