St. Louis – In response to low Census mail-in rates, the City of St. Louis, Schnucks Stores, and the Census Bureau are joining forces to help ensure that every person is counted in the City of St. Louis. The City of St. Louis currently has a response rate of 60%, which is 4% lower than the national average. To help make sure that every St. Louisan is counted, Schnucks has volunteered eight of their City locations as a Census Questionnaire Assistance Center (QAC) to make it easy for each City resident to fill out and send in their Census forms.

"An accurate Census count is vitally important to the City of St. Louis," said Mayor Francis Slay. "And I would like to thank Schnucks for standing up and helping their community. A recent Brookings study shows that St. Louis received $3400 for each person counted in fiscal year 2008. That's a huge amount of money that benefits our City and our citizens. Every person in St. Louis counts – and every person in St. Louis should be counted."

Scott Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer of Schnuck Markets, Inc. agrees. "The Census has the power to add to services and improve the quality of life for every person in our region.  Because our stores are so conveniently located, we are in a position to help the City and Census Bureau reach as many people as possible particularly in areas that are traditionally undercounted," he said.  "As a company, Schnucks is taking every opportunity to encourage everyone to be counted."
