“Bringing It Together Day” celebrated 32-years at the MUNY with Ollie Stewart, Executive Director of Southside Wellness, for a full day of honoring senior citizens throughout the St. Louis area. Michael McMillan, License Collector of the City of St. Louis, has been a participant for many years. This year, he recognized Southside Wellness with his office’s Community Service Award. In attendance were collaborating partners representing the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging; the City of St. Louis Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department; and many local senior centers.
McMillan stated when speaking to the audience, “I am proud to recognize each of you for Older American’s Month and how Ollie and her partners literally bring it all together each year to help strengthen relations among the business community, health organizations and the senior populations they serve in the interest of vitality, health and safety. You prove without a doubt that you are never too old to play. Congratulations.”
Year round, McMillan as Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board for the St. Louis Community Empowerment Foundation (STLCEF) works tirelessly to support Senior Citizens. For many years, he has visited approximately 3,000 senior citizens from 60 different senior facilities and hosts Senior Citizen Forums. During these forums, STLCEF gives away life essential items and information provided by the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging that provides assistance and resources; the St. Louis Police Department that provides safety information to address any level of elderly abuse or safety risks; and the Circuit Attorney’s office which provides very helpful tips on fraud and exploitation of seniors. The Office of the License Collector prepared a 40-page Discount Booklet that list discounted services by businesses that have compliant with their licenses. Seniors report that they have received substantial savings by using the booklet. Each summer over 300 senior citizens are bussed to the Back to School and Community Empowerment Festival, which provides intergenerational exposure and support for the school children.
